Siding made for Kingsport homes

Kingsport was built on purpose. When the city was re-chartered in 1917, it became an early American example of a “garden city,” and part of it was laid out by the planner and landscape architect John Nolen. More than a century later, that early planning still shapes how much of the city looks.

American Home is a siding company based in Knoxville. We’ve been at it since 1997, and Kingsport is one of the Tri-Cities communities we schedule crews for. There is no Kingsport office; the drive from our shop is roughly an hour and a half to two hours. We plan around that so it never becomes your problem.

Respecting a Planned City’s Look

Church Circle is the heart of the original 1919 city plan. It was designed by railroad engineer William Dunlap and refined by Nolen, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Its four churches are brick buildings in the Colonial Revival style.

If your home leans traditional, whether it shares some of that Colonial Revival feel or simply has symmetrical windows and a classic roofline, the siding should support that look rather than fight it. A few things we look at:

  • Lap exposure. A narrower reveal often reads more traditional than a wide modern board.
  • Corner and window trim. Thin, flat trim can make a well-proportioned house look cheap. We size trim to the house.
  • Color. Whites, creams and muted grays tend to sit well next to red brick. Bring us your ideas and we’ll bring samples.

James Hardie fiber cement is a strong fit for this kind of house because it takes a crisp painted finish. If low upkeep is your top priority, Alside Odyssey Plus vinyl offers traditional profiles without repainting.

From Fort Robinson to Ridgefields

Kingsport is a city of distinct neighborhoods: Fort Robinson, Highland Park, Ridgefields and many others, spread across Sullivan County and into Hawkins County. Each house has its own age, style and history, which is why we don’t show up with a one-size answer.

On an older house, the first job is figuring out what’s under the current siding. Sometimes it’s original wood in decent shape. Sometimes it’s two layers deep with soft sheathing behind it. On a newer house, the question is more often whether the builder-grade siding was installed well in the first place. Either way, the estimate visit is where we find out, and we’ll show you what we see.

The River, the Ridges and the Rain

The South Fork of the Holston River makes up most of the water inside city limits, and Bays Mountain Park sits within the city’s park system. Long-term normals put Kingsport at about 45 inches of rain a year, spread fairly evenly through the seasons, with July usually the wettest month. Snowfall averages around five inches, mostly in January and February, and the city’s record low is 18 below zero.

Steady rain all year is the real test for siding. Problems rarely start in the middle of a wall. They start where water collects:

  • Behind gutters that overflow onto the siding
  • At the bottom of walls where splash-back keeps the lowest courses wet
  • Around older windows where the flashing has failed

We check each of these during the estimate, and we fix underlying damage before new siding goes on. Covering rot just hides the bill until later.

What Working With Us Looks Like

Because we’re traveling, we work in clear steps. First, a free estimate at your home with a written proposal. Next, a scheduled start date with materials ordered ahead, so the crew arrives ready to work consecutive days. Last, a walk-through with you before we call the job done.

Founded by Mark and Crissy Sims, American Home is still locally owned and Knoxville-based. License: #2685.

FAQ

Kingsport siding FAQ

Still have a question? Call us — a real person answers.

Is there an extra charge because Kingsport is far from Knoxville?

Your written estimate will show the full price for your project. Ask us during the visit and we will walk you through how it’s put together.

Should I remove the old siding or go over it?

We usually recommend removal so we can see and fix the wall underneath. We’ll explain what we find before you decide.

Which siding holds up best to year-round rain?

All of the products we install can handle Kingsport weather when they’re installed correctly. Flashing, clearances and drainage matter as much as the material.
